Plans for Big Day/Night Out include non-stop music on a Main Stage featuring more than six regional ensembles and ending with an evening concert by Billy and the Jets, an Elton John/Billy Joel tribute band; a vendor fair of area merchants, artists and artisans; raffles; and community booths.

Activities, designed to highlight the work of the Westfield Police, are planned to include safety demonstrations; drills; equipment displays; Police horses and canines; Cadet drills and interactive activities such as rides in a police car and more.

Big Day/Night Out is the first major collaboration of WOW and the Police. When Police Lieutenant Eric Hall of the Westfield Police Department contacted WOW Board Member Jason Polan to ask if there was a possibility of working together on the Department’s annual National Night Out Against Crime event, it proved to be very serendipitous.

Now in its 39th year, Night Out is a nationwide event designed to strengthen police – community relationships.

“The Westfield Police are proud of our city and thrilled to partner with Westfield On Weekends and National Night Out to foster a true sense of community, as we gather under positive circumstances,” Hall explained,” Hall said.

“Night Out activities usually happen on the first Tuesday of August, but we wanted to make it accessible to more residents and we received permission to co-host the event on the first Saturday in August by coupling with WOW’s planned music festival,” Hall added.

Polan had been working with a WOW committee on reimagining last year’s Westfield Concert Series as an all-day festival of music that would feature regional musical acts and climax with an evening headliner.

“Combining what WOW had begun to plan with the Night Out activities which the Police wished to enlarge and enhance was a no-brainer, given the Police always play a big part in facilitating WOW’s larger downtown events,” Polan said
